Comparative analysis of professional English texts

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to compare three professional English texts which describe humanoid robots, each from a different perspective. The first text is taken from a scientific magazine called ‘Science Robotics‘ and represents the popular-scientific style. The second text is taken from the book ‘Humanoid Robots, Human-like machines‘ and it is an example of the scientific prose style. The third material used for the analysis is a video that was released on a YouTube channel of company CNET. It was necessary to convert the video to written form, before starting to analyse it. Certainly, there are considerable distinctions between these texts because they are intended for different types of readers or listeners. The bachelor thesis describes the contents of these three texts and explains their styles. Moreover, the thesis focuses on the comparison of spoken and written discourse, the language functions of the texts according to the linguist Roman Jacobson, and the register levels of the analysis.

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to provide a comparative analysis of professional texts on computer science. VxLAN technology, which is most often used in data centers, was chosen as the topic for the materials. The first text chosen for the analysis is a web journal article, the second is the technical documentation Request for Comments (RFC), the third is a video lecture. The main goal of this work is to examine the selected materials from different perspectives and to determine the extent to which the texts, written and spoken, differ in their use of language and what common features they have. To achieve this goal, the materials are investigated in terms of several discourse features, including language functions, style and genre, cohesion and coherence, and deixis. The work also tries to define whether the analyzed materials are typical examples of their genres and styles.

Impact of Netspeak on the Development of the English Language

The aim of this Bachelor's thesis is to analyze the Internet slang (Netspeak), describe its development, distinctive features and functions. Furthermore, the thesis evaluates the changes caused by Netspeak that occurred in the English language. By means of concrete examples the thesis points out the new elements of Netspeak which have contributed to the development of the English language and thus influenced Internet users’ command of language.

Vagueness in English university Arts and Humanities lectures

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na klasifikaci a popis funkcí jednotlivých skupin vágních jazykových prostředků, vymezuje rozdíly mezi mluveným a psaným akademickým registrem a funkce jazyka v akademických přednáškách. Materiál pro praktickou část je čerpán z British Academic Spoken English (BASE) korpusu, ze kterého je v první části analýzy excerpováno 6 úryvků z přednášek z oblasti humanitních věd, každý o 2000 slovech. Analýza obsahuje detailní rozbor vágních prostředků v úryvcích přednášek, jejich klasifikaci do skupin popsaných v teoretické části práce, popis jejich nejčastějších komunikativních funkcí a míst nejfrekventovanějšího výskytu v přednáškách. Druhá část analýzy je založena na všech přednáškách z oblasti humanitních věd v BASE korpusu a popisuje tři slovní druhy, které se nejčastěji vyskytují ve vágních jazykových prostředcích z předchozího výzkumu. Analýza zkoumá nejčastější kolokace a bezprostřední okolí vybraných slov. Klíčová slova: vágnost, univerzitní přednášky, funkce jazyka

Funkce/ (a) srozumitelnost psané češtiny v intrakulturní komunikaci neslyšících

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá psanou češtinou v intrakulturní komunikaci Neslyšících. V teoretické části zpracovává kapitoly týkající se obecných specifik neslyšící komunity, charakteristických rysů komunikace Neslyšících (interkulturní, ale především intrakulturní), specifik jejich písemného projevu a čtenářských dovedností. Teoretická část zahrnuje také témata, jako jsou interference z mateřského / prvního jazyka a teorie překladu, jelikož i tato témata s inter a intrakulturní komunikací Neslyšících úzce souvisí. Praktická část se zabývá výzkumem v oblasti intrakulturní komunikace. Konkrétně otázkou, jestli české texty psané Neslyšícími mají v intrakulturní komunikaci této jazykové menšiny nějakou funkci a zda jsou pro jednotlivé adresáty srozumitelné. Výchozí hypotézou je, že Neslyšící více rozumějí defektním textům, jejichž autory jsou samotní Neslyšící, než textům gramaticky správným, které jsou psané rodilými uživateli češtiny. Výzkum popisuje a analyzuje proces intrakulturní komunikace prostřednictvím psané češtiny, poukazuje na určité problémy, jež v tomto případě nastávají, a charakterizuje chyby, kterých se účastníci komunikace dopouštějí. V závěru práce se hodnotí vhodnost používání psané češtiny v intrakulturní komunikaci Neslyšících.
